Passing Judgement – Take Your Time, Hit the Pause Button

Today, I decided to use the suggested topic for UBC – thank you Paul! Today’s suggestion – Curating content from ezinearticles.

So often, we tend to pass judgement on people based on preconceived notions, on outward appearances, on first glance for so many reasons without even knowing why we do it. I have to be honest, I have done that too (more often in the past than now though). And I learned that people are often so very different from how you perceive them (especially when first impressions you have might be negative) and often times can surprise you, and you might actually end up discovering someone who can inspire you, or maybe even become a friend! In my personal experience, I have discovered people who have surprised me and I have learned not to judge too quickly. And it has definitely helped me have a richer, better life experience… so, like I tell my kids, let us hit the pause button before we pass judgement.

What about you? Do you have any such experiences? Let me know

The article I picked from ezinearticles that reflects this thought process in me..is the one below by Daniel Blachard

The Trick Is to Not Judge People Too Quickly

Sometimes life is tricky, wouldn’t you agree? There is a lot that we do not understand in this world. And in some ways, believe it or not, that is a good thing. Not knowing everything gives us something to work towards and keeps us from getting bored too easily. This creates variety; and after all, isn’t variety the spice of life? Sometimes though, we forget about this simple joy of variety and end up judging people on what they are doing. Our judgments are most often based solely on what we know, what we do, or our own unique background experiences. This faulty judging based on our limited personal experience is the genesis of most of humanity’s problems…

Many times we are too quick to judge others and thus sadly lose out on what could be a pleasant, interesting and joyful interaction with another. Is it really is possible to look at each individual that we encounter as the miracle that they truly are, and a representative of another unique and fascinating experience? Of course it is! Imagine the wonderful hours that could be invested joyfully in the marvel of another’s experience and knowledge that is a whole other world from ours! Imagine how we could improve our knowledge about how this world works and all the good that could come from it.

Imagine our learning becoming experiential again and life being interesting, new and fun again because we are curious about everything and everyone! What a great world, or at least a better world, this place could be if more people approached life and each other with awe and curiosity for their story, another’s story. Let’s put our own story aside for a moment when we meet others. We all already know our story, right? This is the time to learn another’s story.

Now teens, go learn, lead, and lay the way to a better world for all of us. Remember to not judge people too quickly. That’s the secret to success. And once again, thanks in advance for all that you do, and all that you will do…
