‘A’ Word Poems

Absquatulate

A is for Absquatulate

Absquatulate, you see,
is when I decide I want to be
some place else that’s not here,
some place else both far and near.

Absquatulate, you see,
is something quietly sneaky.
But I guess you could use it
with a little bit of a twist.

Like so: “The news of late
makes me want to absquatulate
to the planet Erid, though
the sky there’s dark and weird, you know.”

But then again, on second thought,
while Rocky might become your bae,
home is, after all, where your heart
decides to be–to stay.

A Tanka Trio Too

Today’s NaPoWriMo/GloPoWriMo prompt challenges us “to write our yown tanka – or multi-tanka poem. Theme and tone are up to us, but try to maintain the five-line stanza and syllable count.

Tanka for today?
Let us try it, shall we, brain?
Nope, says she, am weary.
Let us though absquatulate
To where clouds float with dream thoughts!

Tanka for today?
I absquatulate inside
Into my mind-space
Where all else shrinks, world recedes
Stillness hums within my skin

Tanka for today?
Oh no! ginger-tea in hand
I absquatulate
To where escapes are offered
Books and words and more await

The ‘A’ Books

Amber & Clay by Laura Amy Schlitz. (Verse Novels; 10- 14 years and up).

Description: Blending verse, prose, and illustrated archeological “artifacts,” this is a tale that vividly transcends time, an indelible reminder of the power of language to illuminate the over- and underworlds of human history.

At the top of my TBR now! I loved Schlitz’s Good Masters! Sweet Ladies!

And We Rise: The Civil Rights Movement in Poems by Erica Martin (Poetry; 12 years and up)

Description: A poignant, powerful, all-too-timely collection that is both a vital history lesson and much-needed conversation starter in our modern world. Complete with historical photographs, author’s note, chronology of events, research, and sources.

This book is a powerful blend of history and verse – perfect for thoughtful discussions, and also the reason I devoured it.
