The Bookish Five Featuring Heart Lamp

Kannada wasn’t the language I spoke at home, but it was an integral part of my everyday life growing up in Karnataka. It was the language of school lessons, street signs, casual conversations, and local stories. While Tamil was my mother language, Kannada – along with English and Hindi – was part of my academic life. Thus, Kannada became a language I grew comfortable with—familiar, practical, and rooted in place.

So when Banu Mushtaq’s Heart Lamp won the Booker Prize, it felt significant. Not just because of the global recognition, but because a language that shaped so much of my day-to-day life is being celebrated on an international platform.

Heart Lamp

Heart Lamp by Banu Mushtaq and translated by Deepa Bhasthi (Short Stories)

Description: In the twelve stories of Heart Lamp, Banu Mushtaq exquisitely captures the everyday lives of women and girls in Muslim communities in southern India. Published originally in the Kannada language between 1990 and 2023, praised for their dry and gentle humour, these portraits of family and community tensions have garnered both censure from conservative quarters as well India’s most prestigious literary awards. This is a collection sure to be read for years to come.

I read part of one of the short stories within in both the original Kannada (found it on Mushtaq’s blog here) and in the translated version in Heart Lamp; loved them both!

23rd – 29th – A songwriter composes a song about your love for books. What would the song’s title be?

A few titles came to my mind, including ‘Bookmarked Moments,’ and ‘Once Upon My Bookshelf’ but once I decided on this third one, I couldn’t stop myself, and ended up writing a little song! My Heart Between the Lines

I opened the door called a book one day,
I wandered into pages, let my cares drift away,
With every word, a new world did shine —
And soon I found myself lost between the lines.

Made new friends in stories I read,
Walked through lands in two-page spreads,
Adventures calling out, “Make me mine!”
How sweet it is to be lost between the lines.

Between the covers, I escape, I soar,
Each chapter opens up another door.
No need to run — no need for signs,
I know the way…
for my heart’s between the lines.

In bookmarked corners, time winds and unwinds,
Each page a balm for my soul and mind.
No map, no guide — just stories intertwined,
And I return to where I’m lost between the lines.

In every tale, some part of me aligns —
A life I’ve lived between those lines.
No need to run — no need for signs,
I know the way…
I left my heart between the lines.

  1. The book you highlighted today with stories set in India sounds simply wonderful. I bet I’d enjoy it best if I could find an audio recording with a person from India narrating it. A few years ago I listened to the book The Ministry of Utmost Happiness read by the author Arundhati Roy. I tell you what. It was like I made a trip to India myself. The experience was exquisite. Thanks for highlighting you book, Heart Lamp. Adding to my TBR

  2. I love the idea of an adulting starting kit. That’s such a thoughtful gift, especially when the graduate is moving town and starts another chapter in their lives away from their dear ones. They need a bit of help, and who better to do it than their own family, through this gift.

  3. These are such good ideas, books and music related ideas always work. I am thinking of creating that playlist and get some books for my dad.

  4. What a wonderful list of gift ideas for Dad and Graduates! My kids once did the toolbox idea once and he loved it!

  5. I think that a Dadventure day sounds like a really awesome idea and a great way to spend time with dad doing something that he enjoys. Mine would want to go out and enjoy a family meal.

  6. A memory jar with notes inside it is such a good idea. I love handmade gifts as they can be so meaningful and heartfelt.

  7. I love all of these ideas, especially the Dad-isms. Father’s Day is coming up and it’s hard to buy something for my husband because he already has everything he wants!

  8. What a wonderful roundup of thoughtful and meaningful gift ideas! I love that these suggestions focus on heart and creativity—it’s a refreshing change from the usual.

  9. I really appreciate the creative inspiration. I especially loved the “Dadventure Day” and the “Adulting Starter Kit” — such personal touches. This post made my gift planning a whole lot easier (and more heartfelt)!

  10. I am loving these ideas so much…. especially the Daventure idea! My husband would love that…. and I can going to chat with the kids to come up with something good 😉

  11. Thank you for sharing these gift ideas! My sister is graduating and I still don’t have a present for her. Love the idea of the “adulting” starter pack. I am think of adding a few more items on the list.
