Sunday Scribblings #228: Tau-ku-ing Time to Celebrate and All That

So the last few days flew by in a flash, and I am wondering if it was all just a dream! I took time off from here to celebrate and more.. My son walked in his commencement ceremony along with almost 2000 other students last Sunday, and it was definitely a proud moment for us. We had family drive down there to celebrate this momentous occasion with us which made it all more, and just seeing how many friends came by to celebrate with my son made me happy. It made me happy for I saw that not only did he learn but also built relationships that are sure to last. Now looking forward to Tau Day or 6-28 and thus bringing you an invented haiku variation – the tau-ku! Read on to find out more, though there is more to find out about tau than the tau-ku (which is pretty straightforward!)

Poetic Sundays: Celebrate Tau Day with a Tau-ku!

The tauku is one of the many haiku variations, and simply put, it is a haiku with a syllabic count of 6-2-8 across its three lines.

🧮 Why Tau?

Tau advocates argue that Ļ„ (tau = 2Ļ€) is a more natural and intuitive constant for describing circles, since a full circle is 2Ļ€ radians.Ā Scientific American states that ā€œAt its heart, pi refers to a semicircle, whereas tau refers to the circle in its entirety.”

So What is the Tau-ku?

The tau-ku is a modern poetic form that blends mathematics and poetry, inspired by the Greek letter τ (tau), which equals 2π (approximately 6.28). It was created as a playful counterpart to the pi-ku, which is based on the digits of π (3.14).

The Tau-ku’sĀ Characteristics

So the tau-ku’s elements are that it is:

  • stanzaic: is a single three-line stanza
  • syllabic: following the tau’s first three digits, it is 6/2/8
  • untitled (but you could use a title if you wish)
  • and does not mention a theme (like nature for haiku, but given this one is based on math, maybe you could work that in)

šŸ“ Structure of a Tau-ku:

  • A three-line poem where the syllable count of each line reflects the first three digits of tau:
    • Line 1: 6 syllables
    • Line 2: 2 syllables
    • Line 3: 8 syllables

šŸŒ€ Ways to Use It in Classrooms/Learning

  • Great for STEM + poetry crossovers
  • Perfect for Tau Day (June 28)
  • Can be used to teach syllable awareness and concise expression

At Home and On My Blog

On my blog since my last Scribblings, I ended up with the posts below:

On the home-front, as I mentioned, it has been a whirlwind of sorts, and we are still dealing with the aftermath – loads of laundry waiting to be folded; a garage full of stuff from two student apartments waiting to be organized, and basking in the happiness of graduations, freshman year completed, and having our home full again!
