Ink and Love: 5 Poems Perfect for Mothers Everyday

There are way too many poems for mothers, about mothers, and motherhood. So many that would work for Mother’s Day or just at any time of the year for moms. And I had to pick myself from deep out of the rabbit hole to emerge with randomly selected 5 poems perfect for mothers everyday and of course, for Mother’s Day among the numberless ones I read. Granted, I have written many poems about being a mom as well but you can find them on my blog for later reading if you wish!

This post is also for my Five for Friday series (that I seem to keep forgetting about!). Which is one of the other reasons I stuck to five 🙂 or rather a reason that restricted me to five, for otherwise my brain is going through FOMO of sharing the rest of the poems with you. But fear not, I have provided links later in the post for many many more poems you can read, enjoy, and share with moms you love and know; they are kind of perfect for mothers everyday, and yes, for Mother’s Day too (this Sunday here in the US)!

So here they are, in no particular order,

5 Poems Perfect for Mothers Everyday

Only One Mother by George Cooper

This poem can work for every child about their own mother. And I love the sweet sentiments that young children can easily relate to here. Apparently there is a song based on this one (I found some sheet music on Amazon but not the song itself – so if you have heard it or know of it, please do share it with me. In the meantime, I hope to have my son learn the music for this one!)

The Reading Mother by Strickland Gillilan

For all those who have had their moms read to them (or still do), here is a poem that is perfect. Each time I read this poem by Strickland Gillilan, I smile. While my mom told me stories (as did my grandmoms), I think I loved reading for myself from the very first instant that I could. But I did read to my kids (and now read with them – or read the books they read whenever I can), and those are now cherished memories (for me at least, and hoping for them too years later)

You’re My Mother by Forest Houtenschil

Short, sweet, and so very apt to say it all to your mom for any day, any time!

Perfect for Mothers

The Mother’s Prayer for Its Daughter by Tina Fey

So this selection is one I couldn’t resist. Something very different from the others, but with Tina Fey’s trademark humor and so much that very likely goes through the minds of many mothers with daughters, this I had to include here. And if you have not read Bossypants (I have read it in bits and pieces and continue to do so and be awed by Fey’s skills), do get a copy for yourself and read it soon.

M-O-T-H-E-R, A Word that Means the World to Me by Howard Johnson

I have usually just seen the acronym part of this song with lyrics by Howard Johnson set to music by Theodore Morse in 1915. You can find the sheet music here on the Internet Archive or get a copy for yourself here.

And if you want to listen to the song, here it is:

  1. I will say, I really enjoy reading a good poem and each one of these are perfect. I have a book of poems my children gave me when they were little and it is such a treasured memory book!

  2. Wow these are so beautiful and lovely poems for mother day. I just wish that I could share some of these with my mother on this day. Thanks for sharing this with us.
