Sunday Scribblings #28: One Day at a Time

Live One Day At A Time – and make it a masterpiece ~ The Dalai Lama♥

So while I am not sure about the masterpiece aspect of it, I am certainly focusing on the now and living one day at a time. This does not necessarily mean I don’t know what next, but simply being aware of today and definitely not worrying about the tomorrows or things outside my control. So let us follow the Dalai Lama’s advice and take life one day at a time! I am loving the A to Zen poster based on his quotes, available here.

Poetic Sundays

The Gnomic Poem

This week, I bring you – Gnomic Poetry.

What is the gnomic poem and how to write it?

Gnomic poetry is aphoristic verse containing short, clever saying that states a general piece of truth or advice, often with a pinch of humor. It comes from the Greek word gnome which means “moral aphorism” or “proverb.” Gnomes are found in the literature of many cultures; ranging from early Greek literature to Indian literature including in the Vedas and the ancient Indian epic, the Mahabharatha as well as Old English/Saxon literature, among others.

Some examples of aphorisms:

  • Pride goes before a fall.
  • “Yesterday is but today’s memory, and tomorrow is today’s dream.” -Khalil Gibran
  • “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view – until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” – To Kill a Mockingbird

My Example Gnomic Poem

Coming soon…. but you can read wonderful gnomic verses by Robert Creeley here.

  • April 13th is National Scrabble Day, and I have been celebrating it for a week or so already! I am a word-nerd and Scrabble was definitely a childhood favorite. As for now, I am hooked onto the game on my phone!!
  • It seems apt that we started working on our garden this weekend without realizing it is National Gardening Day soon (on April 14th). I am keeping my fingers crossed that my thumbs are greener this time around! You can check out the Gardening for Geeks book I recently reviewed.
  • Laughter is the best medicine! Take a moment (or more) to celebrate the International Moment of Laughter Day on April 14th.
  • April 15th celebrates World Art Day. Take a virtual tour of any one of the many museums offering them free now. Create your own artistic masterpiece. Share it with the world!
  • We are all celebrating this everyday now!!! So maybe we should turn the tables around on this day – National Wear Your Pajamas to Work Day!!! Note that it is celebrated annually on April 16th.
  • Give a virtual hats off to all the newspaper columnists who work to bring us the wonderful articles we read everyday on National Columnists Day, which is April 18th. It honors Ernie Pyle, a columnist who died April 18, 1945 while reporting for WWII.

  1. You’ve had a good week. A little gardening. Lots of photography. Poetry. A full week.

I’m glad to hear that today is National Scrabble Day. I’m getting the board out now.

Your photos are especially good this week, I think.

  2. I might have to try my hand at gnomic poetry. Thank you for sharing! Your raised garden bed looks wonderful. I’m so terrible when it comes to gardening. I kill everything I try to grow. Thanks to my husband my cactus is still alive. I don’t know how my roses survive. They are hardy plants. Haha.

I would love to celebrate National Wear Pajamas to Work Day. I’m afraid though that is a day I have to go into the office and don’t think that would go over well with my bosses. Maybe I can celebrate it a day early.

I hope you have a good week. Stay safe and well.
